Mexico City, Jun 9 (EFE).- In 2022, Mexico produced more films than ever for the second consecutive year, 258, a figure that is accompanied by greater diversity, inclusion and decentralization, according to the yearbook of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine).

“For the second consecutive year, after the pandemic, when production collapsed, the rates have risen sharply and this year the number of feature films is 258, a number similar to last year and a record for Mexican cinema in its entire history, Not even in the golden age were so many films produced,” said the general director of Imcine, María Novarro, at the presentation of the report.

46% of the productions had some kind of public support, after a year in which the Mexican government received various criticisms for its scant support for the industry.

In addition, he stressed, the cinema produced was “more diverse, inclusive, egalitarian and decentralized than ever”,

21 feature films were made by indigenous or Afro-descendant filmmakers, 20 of them in native languages.

“Mexican cinema is being enriched with voices that were not reflected before, and now they are an important percentage,” Novarro celebrated.

The yearbook, prepared in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), contains 25 lines of research and diversity of data about film production, distribution and consumption in Mexico, as well as its contribution to economic and labor development, the impact of the festivals and the recognitions received nationally and internationally.

As a novelty, this 2022 edition includes a section on the preservation of Mexican cinematographic heritage and another on the relationship between music and cinema.

Another of the aspects highlighted by those responsible for the yearbook is the growing decentralization of cinema in Mexico, which is expanding into new territories; the advancement of experimental cinema; or the 195 recognitions received in 34 countries.

However, they also highlighted some of the problems facing the film industry in the country, such as the unequal distribution of its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP), of 0.04%.

According to data collected in the report, of every 1,000 pesos (about $57) generated by Mexican cinema, 784 ($45) go to companies, 213 ($12) to families, and 3 ($0.17) to production taxes.

“When we talk about inequality, it is that wealth is generated and it is poorly distributed. If it only happened in the movies, I would go very calm,” ironed the president of INEGI, Graciela Márquez.

The speakers also lamented the low attendance recorded by movie theaters in the country (86% say they do not want to go) and the excess of American productions, which is around 80%.

“American cinema is not killing and we must begin to fight from the Government and the community, so that cinema is not only seen as a product of commercial exchange, but rather that it is our cultural and identity reflection, our memory,” urged the Director of the International Festival of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Abril Alzaga.
