Mexico is part of the project to manufacture super vaccines against covid-19, which will be effective against all variants of concern and aims to create permanent immunity, reported the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

” There is a lot of expectation about the vaccine that some call super vaccine, that could be very effective for all variants of the virus and that could, preferably, provide permanent protection, for a lifetime, ” said Jarbas Barbosa, PAHO assistant director.

The biopharmaceutical company Sinergium Biotech was one of those selected as a center in Argentina and will partner with the biotechnology company mAbxience-belonging to the same group — to develop and manufacture the active ingredients of the vaccine.

The biological will finish its manufacturing process at Liomont laboratories, located in Mexico, which recently ended its contract with the federal government regarding the batches of the AstraZeneca vaccine committed.

“It is still in the process of development. We have candidates for these vaccines but it is in the preclinical phase, they are still in laboratory studies and then have possible clinical trials. And besides, but I want to emphasize that the vaccines that are already available are super vaccines too, because they saved and continue to save millions of lives in all countries of the world.

The super vaccine, he clarified, may be in one, two or three years, while, “we will continue to use the available vaccines since they have managed to reduce serious cases, reduce deaths, as all the data we have in the countries of our region and also in various parts of the world have shown. So, we’re going to take advantage of the super vaccines that saved and have saved so many lives today,” added Barbosa, PAHO assistant director.

PAHO also reported that Mexico will receive 18 million AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccines in a maximum of two weeks to strengthen its national covid-19 program.

“Indeed, Mexico still has a remnant of vaccines to receive from Covax. Before he made arrangements directly with the Covax mechanism, now he asked PAHO to deliver those vaccines.

“We are already in contact with Mexican authorities and producers for all legal and administrative arrangements. We hope that everything can be completed in a couple of days, and then the signature and the conclusion of the purchase request, it takes a week or two to start the delivery of vaccines for the amount, which is very important, of 18 million, which shall be delivered in different deliveries to the country,” said Barbosa.

The 18 million AstraZeneca “will be an important boost for vaccination against covid-19 in Mexico,” the PAHO assistant director added.

Yesterday, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, reported that this month Mexico will receive 18 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine through the Covax mechanism, “so we would be very close to the numbers that are needed for the entire strategy (vaccination) presented.”
