Mexico is paying attention to the final electoral count in Venezuela: SRE

Mexico City. The Mexican government said Monday that it is confident that the will of the Venezuelan people expressed in the presidential elections held last Sunday in that South American country will be respected, and that it is keeping a close eye on the final count of the electoral reports and records.

Preliminary results from last Sunday favored the reelection of Nicolás Maduro with 51.2 percent, while his closest competitor, Edmundo González, obtained 44.2 percent.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) said that “in accordance with its constitutional principles of foreign policy, with full respect for the sovereignty of Venezuela and the self-determination of its peoples, Mexico trusts that the will of the Venezuelan people expressed at the polls will be respected through a transparent process of scrutiny.”

He also reported that they have been closely following the presidential elections in Venezuela “and, above all, they welcome the civic and peaceful nature of the election day.”

“Mexico is keeping a close eye on the final count of votes and detailed reports from the National Electoral Council of that country to learn the final results,” he stressed.
