Mexico is a recycling champion in Latin America

The country reached 1.9 million tons of recycled material per year, according to the first Quantitative Study of the Plastics Recycling Industry in Mexico presented by the National Association of Plastic Industries (Anipac) at the seventh Waste Pickers forum “Innovation and Sustainable Production”.

The document prepared by W4 Research Y Sergio Lamanna Comprehensive Communication, detailed that among the 363 participating companies, the most recycled material would be polyethylene, which represents 51.2%, followed by PET with 22.1%, polypropylene with 18.2%, PVC with 2.1% and polystyrene with 1.8%.

Aldimir Torres Arenas, president of the Anipac, highlighted the serious problem that pollution represents worldwide, for which he considered it would be important to reduce the volume of waste to minimize the carbon footprint.

“Much of the pollution we generate is due to the poor collection of the waste we produce. Mexico is the Latin American champion in waste generation. If the collection was done properly, we could improve people’s quality of life, “he said.

Meanwhile, he shared that, through the creation of infrastructure, the promotion of environmental education campaigns, tax incentives, as well as promoting the creation of management plans, it would be possible to promote the recycling of plastics in the country.
