Fifty -six corpses were found in mass graves in Northern Mexico, near the border with the US, the prosecution, which has undertaken the investigation, said today.
The bodies were found in the state of Chihuahua and their exhumation took place in the previous days, with the help of the army, the local prosecutor’s office said, without giving any clarification on the identity of the victims. Criminal organizations dealing with drugs, weapons and immigrants act in this Mexican area.
Authorities have found corpses so far, whole skeletons, individual bones, calyxes and clothes. The relics were sent to the forensic services to determine how and when these people died.
The prosecution pledged to provide legal protection to the families of the victims.
The tombs were in a location called “El Willy” and controlled by the criminal organization La Linea, “one of the armed offshoots” by Siudad Huarez’s cartel, according to La Jornada.
Chihuah has been plagued for years by the violence associated with organized crime, as it is on the road to drug trafficking and immigrants to the US. On December 26, at least 12 corpses were found in many graves about two hours from the border town of Siudad Huares. In this state by December 2024 there were 3,927 missing people, much less than other states where the cartels, such as Halisko (west) and Tamulipas (north) where the missing are more than 13,000.
In May 2022, Mexico reached the tragic number of more than 100,000 missing, based on official figures, the UN said.
