“Under the protection of the legal system and using the law, we have decided to hold Ecuador accountable for the flagrant violation of the inviolability of the Embassy, ​​against the physical and moral integrity of our diplomats,” reported the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel. Lopez Obrador.

For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena, has reported that, in her complaint, the Mexican authorities demand that the United Nations suspend Ecuador as a member of the organization until a formal apology is offered for an incident that has been criticized internationally.

According to President López Obrador, this request has the objective of setting a precedent for violations of the national sovereignty of a United Nations member state, and also for possible future cases similar to what occurred at the Mexican Embassy, ​​according to the newspaper ‘Milenio’. .

“What is sought is that a despicable event such as that suffered by Mexico and especially its diplomatic representation is not repeated, that it is not repeated in any country, that international law is guaranteed, that the premises, the embassies of countries in any nation,” added the Mexican leader.

The Ecuadorian Police entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito over the weekend, where former Vice President Glas had been staying for weeks, alleging fear for his safety. Mexico had confirmed shortly before the police operation that it would provide political asylum to President Rafael Correa’s former ‘number two’.

The authorities of Ecuador accuse the former vice president of an alleged crime of embezzlement of public funds for reconstruction work in the province of Manabí after a strong earthquake in 2016, which left more than 670 dead.
