Mexico Denies Being a Safe Third Country and Plans Repatriation of Venezuelan Migrants

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Barcena He rejected that Mexico is a safe third country obliged by the United States to keep migrants in national territory and assured that our government will begin the repatriation of Venezuelan migrants who are stranded in our nation in the attempt to cross the border into the United States.

“We have chosen to make assisted returns in some cases, most of them voluntarily, but assisted returns are already being made to Cuba, to Honduras and we are going to start with Venezuela, which was one of the reasons why I was in Venezuela yesterday,” he indicated.

He acknowledged that at this moment if we have the arrival of 60 thousand Venezuelans per month, it is impossible for us to manage the journey well.

“The case of Venezuela is very important because simply in the month of September, so that you have an idea, 60 thousand migrants from Venezuela arrived in Mexico, in the month of September alone, 35 thousand migrants from Guatemala, 27 thousand from Honduras,” he stated.
