Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Mexico asking for Ecuador to be expelled from the United Nations (UN). This request is in line with Mexico’s filing of a lawsuit against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice on Thursday (11/4) regarding the lawsuit against the attack on the Mexican embassy in Quito, Ecuador.
Mexico’s lawsuit calls for Ecuador to be expelled from the UN unless the country offers a public apology.
“Recognizing violations of basic principles and norms of international law,” said Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena, quoted from AFPFriday (12/4).
The goal is to “Guarantee reparation for the moral damage inflicted on the Mexican state and its citizens,” Barcena said at a news conference.
At the same press conference, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also revealed the purpose of the lawsuit filed by his country.
“(The goal) is that this does not happen again in any other country in the world, and that international law is guaranteed,” he explained.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) based in The Hague, Netherlands confirmed on Thursday evening that it had received the lawsuit.
Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said that suspending a country from the UN was an issue that must be decided by member states.
“We really hope that tensions between Ecuador and Mexico can be handled through dialogue,” Dujarric told reporters in New York, United States (US).
While a full examination of the issue may take several years, Mexico in its lawsuit also asked an international judge to impose “temporary measures” as a series of emergency orders to protect its diplomatic officials.
“The Mexican Embassy in Ecuador, along with its property and archives, is at risk of being unprotected or even violated again,” Mexico said in its lawsuit.
Previously, Ecuadorian security forces stormed the Mexican embassy last Friday to arrest former Ecuador Vice President Jorge Glas.
The former vice president is wanted on corruption charges. He has been given asylum or shelter by Mexico.
This rare attack in a diplomatic area sparked international outrage. Mexico also cut ties with Ecuador and pulled its diplomats out of the country.
On the other hand, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa called the embassy raid a necessary measure to detain Glas because he was a flight risk. Noboa said he was willing to “resolve any differences” with Mexico.
