Mexico and Central America are facing unprecedented migrant flows. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), last month, 16,000 people were arriving at the Mexican border each day. Mexico as a starting point and place of passage plays a crucial role. And while the United States seeks to protect its borders with the extension of the wallMexico disapproves and defends a completely different vision.

From the beginning, Mexico has insisted on the need to find solutions to the substance and causes of the migration problem. From the Mexican perspective, the wall or militarization of the borders are not effective in reducing the flow of people to the United States. The position of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is intended to be in favor of people and migrants.

Ask for help in the United States

According to him, we must create employment opportunities in the countries to ensure that people no longer leave their homes. The idea clearly is therefore to ask the United States for help: investment plans in the countries from which migrants leave. Mexico would like to stimulate the creation and development of social programs in Central America and the Caribbean, which it is already doing with one of its policies which consists of granting subsidies to farmers.

The program has been exported to El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize, but its effectiveness must be put into perspective due to the lack of resources and transparency: the results are not really visible and the flow of people is still very important.
