Mexico City. The Mexican government condemned the acts of violence recently recorded in Haiti at the hands of armed gangs in various parts of the country, particularly in the capital Port-au-Prince and in the department of Artibonito.
A day after the United Nations Integrated Office for Haiti (Binuh) presented a report in which it revealed that gangs control 85 percent of the country’s capital, in addition that between July and September at least a thousand 223 people died and 522 were injured as a result of the violence generated by the gangs, the Mexican Foreign Ministry rejected that violence.
“These acts compromise institutions, development and the rule of law in Haiti. “Mexico reiterates its support for the transition process and calls for the Haitian political forces to continue working to finalize the agreements reached in Kingston, Jamaica, which allow the holding of elections in 2025, the institutional strengthening and development that the population requires.” , stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its social networks.
He indicated that Mexico “will continue working with the brother people of the Caribbean through international cooperation actions.”
In its report, Binuh added that in the period studied, the kidnapping of 170 people for ransom was reported and that among the fatalities were at least six children barely ten years old.
The vast majority of cases of violence, the report added, were documented in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, followed by Artibonito and Grand’Anse.
The UN office for this nation recalled that in the April to June quarter, the deaths of at least 945 people were reported and 434 were injured due to violence in the Caribbean country.
In the document, the United Nations expressed its concern about the continuous acts of sexual violence committed by gang members against women and girls, dozens of them murdered after being raped.
