Mexico City’s Iztacalco Pediatric Hospital Introduces Free Hemodialysis for over 490 Minors with Kidney Failure

It will benefit more than 490 minors who suffer from kidney failure; It is the first hospital in the network that has this service

The Ministry of Health of Mexico City (SEDESA) inaugurated this Friday a hemodialysis team at the Iztacalco Pediatric Hospital, for the benefit of more than 490 minor patients suffering from kidney failure.

In the formal ceremony, the executive director of Hospital Care of SEDESA, Judith Meléndez Vania, pointed out that it is the first pediatric hospital in the network that has this free service for girls and boys who do not have social security.

“With the delivery of the new Hemodialysis area, the hopes of children will be met so that they have a better quality of life. This is the first pediatric hospital to have the service; We will support the other hospitals in the SEDESA network with the service,” indicated the doctor.

In turn, the director of the Iztacalco Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Sara Cortés Quesada, indicated that this hospital has been characterized as the bastion of the specialties of pediatric urology and nephrology, services that have been operating since 1984.

He commented that the medical unit serves girls and boys from 1 to 17 years of age, while with the new hemodialysis equipment it is expected to provide 10 to 15 sessions per week.

For her part, pediatric nephrologist Teresa Erika Villalobos Elvira, in charge of this specialty at the hospital, explained that pediatric care is provided to minors with kidney problems, including those who are detected with kidney diseases before birth, through an ultrasound.

“When a patient loses the function of his kidney, he needs special processes called renal replacement treatment, which is hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and the one that provides the best quality of life is kidney transplant,” said the specialist.

It is worth mentioning that the nephrology specialty is completely free at the Iztacalco Pediatric Hospital and serves patients from the 16 Municipalities of Mexico City; as well as municipalities of the State of Mexico such as Nezahualcóyotl, Chalco, Valle de Chalco and Chimalhuacán, as well as some states of the country.
