Mexico surprised and thrashed, 4-1, the mighty France in the debut of Group A of the soccer male of Olympics. The game took place this morning at Tokyo Stadium.
The Mexican goals were scored by Vega, Córdoba, Antuna and Eduardo Aguirre, all in the 2nd half. Veteran striker Gignac added a penalty for the French, also in the final part of the game.
With the result, the Europeans, current world champions, need a victory on Sunday, against South Africa, to dream of a place in the quarter-finals.
The game
Despite the good chances of goal, the teams exaggerated in the divided during the 1st time – in all, there were 16 fouls in 45 minutes.
The emotion, in fact, was left to the complementary stage. Right after the opening whistle, the Mexicans hit the post in a move invalidated by the arbitration for offside.
At two minutes, however, the first goal of men’s football in the Games came out. Lainez made a great move from the right wing and crossed into the middle of the area. Vega, well positioned, tested firmly for Bernardoni’s goal and opened the scoring.
The partial victory did not make Mexico retreat, and at nine, after pressure in the exit of the French ball, the ball was left for Córdoba to swing the opposing net for the 2nd time.
Amid the disadvantage, the Europeans went on the attack in search of the result. At 21 minutes, the young Kolo Muani suffered a penalty from Montes. Gignac, executioner of the Brazilians, converted and decreased: 2 to 1.
