The Mexican Government asked to suspend Ecuador from the UN for the assault on its Embassy in Quito in the complaint it presented to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) this Thursday.

López Obrador recalled this Wednesday that on Tuesday he spoke by phone with his friend Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, who “expressed his solidarity with Mexico from the day after the assault on the embassy.

In the complaint, Mexico demands “the suspension of Ecuador as a member of the United Nations Organization until a public apology is issued, recognizing the violations of the fundamental principles and norms of international law,” said Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena. , at the daily press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Bárcena said that the Mexican Government demands before the ICJ – with jurisdiction to settle disputes between States – that Ecuador apologize and recognize the violations of the fundamental principles and norms of international law, with the purpose of guaranteeing reparation for the moral damage inflicted on the State. Mexican and its nationals.

Bárcena said that, among other points, the aim is for international judges to establish the precedent that any state or nation that acts as Ecuador did will ultimately be expelled from the UN.

What is sought, said President López Obrador, is to prevent situations like this from being repeated in the future.

“What Mexico is doing, on instructions from the president, is putting the multilateral system to the test,” Bárcena said. He said that the world is seeing serious violations of international law and that is why Mexico wants to set a precedent with this lawsuit against the government of Daniel Noboa.

Regarding what consequences there could be directly for Noboa, Bárcena said that given the seriousness of the attack, Mexico is even analyzing possible criminal charges against Ecuadorian officials. “Ecuador and its own people will have to decide what Noboa’s political future is,” she said.
