Mexico approves Cuban Abdala vaccine for children aged 5-11 against Covid-19

Havana, July 3. Mexico will immunize children between the ages of 5 and 11 against covid-19 with the Cuban Abdala vaccine, after being approved by the regulatory body of the North American country, the official Cuban website Cubadebate reported on Monday.

The Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks of Mexico (Cofepris) approved the use of the drug “after a rigorous evaluation process,” the Cuban state biotech company BioCubaFarma said on Twitter.

Mexico became one of the first countries to authorize the emergency use of this Cuban formula against the coronavirus in December 2021 when Cofepris allowed it to be applied to adults, despite the controversy generated around that decision.

At that time, the Mexican authorities indicated that this vaccine meets the requirements of “quality, safety, and efficacy.”

In September of last year, the Mexican government announced the purchase of nine million doses of the vaccine to immunize children between 5 and 11 years of age.

Abdala is one of the three vaccines manufactured by Cuba with covid-19, along with Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus. The Cuban health authorities assure that all three have an efficacy greater than 90%, but so far none has the endorsement of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The use of Abada in Mexico was part of the agreements signed between the presidents of Cuba and Mexico, Miguel Díaz-Canel and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, respectively, to strengthen relations in health matters and in the fight against covid-19, during the visit of the Mexican to Havana in May 2022.
