Mexico City: Chile and Mexico approach the International Criminal Court to investigate Israeli attacks in Gaza.
The demand is to investigate the war crimes from October 7. Mexico’s foreign ministry said the request was made following concerns over an increase in attacks against civilians.
Mexico pointed to several reports from the United Nations detailing incidents that could be considered war crimes under the International Criminal Court.
Mexico, which said it was following the trial proceedings in the genocide case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice, also demanded a court order to immediately suspend the Israeli army.
Chile’s Foreign Minister Alberto Van Claveren told the media in Santiago that his country supports the investigation into war crimes and is ready to appear anywhere for it.
The International Criminal Court is the last resort to try war crimes in situations where local courts are unable to take action. But Israel is not a member state of the court or subject to its jurisdiction.
Proceedings at the Criminal Court are very different from South Africa’s case against Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice.
While the International Court of Justice resolves disputes between states, the International Criminal Court deals with crimes committed by individuals.
