This crime is one more example of the violence that plagues Mexico, where organized crime is present throughout the country.

The State Attorney General’s Office reported that five more were added to the thirteen initial victims of the case that caused a great commotion in the country. They associated them through the disciplines of medicine, anthropology and forensic genetics.

With this, there would be a total of 18 bodies of victims that were identified by personnel from the Comprehensive Unit of Forensic Medical Services in Nogales. It is a unique center in the country due to its advanced technology.

In a press release, the law enforcement institution reported that they are also in the confirmation process “through the discipline of genetics” of four other individuals.

On August 13, in the municipality of Poza Rica, north of Veracruz, they located a safe house. This was used by criminal groups. At the site they located dozens of human remains, packed and frozen in refrigerators.

Initially, ministerial authorities confirmed thirteen victims. However, there were dozens of remains left to be analyzed, so it was not until today that they announced that the number increased to 18.

The Prosecutor’s Office explained that until now there are no foreigners among the victims. He ruled out that in the safe house they found clandestine burials with more victims.

As part of the investigations, it was reported that through coordinated operations with state and federal forces, a total of 16 people were arrested, possibly members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel criminal group, allegedly responsible for the crime.

The official report announced that they are in the process of completing various arrest warrants against other people belonging to the same drug trafficking cartel.

In the last two decades, Veracruz has suffered the death throes of violence related to the operation of drug cartels. These diversified their activities to kidnapping, migrant smuggling and collection of fees, that is, extortion of dozens of sectors of civil society.

As a result of the violence, from 2011 to 2022, 534 clandestine graves were recorded in Veracruz territory, where 704 bodies and thousands of human remains were found.

The Colinas de Santa Fe property in the port of Veracruz, with more than 300 bodies buried there, is the emblematic case for being the largest grave in Latin America.
