Not one, not two, but 1,200 couples exchanged vows of faith and commitment together in a mass wedding on the outskirts of Mexico City setting a new record for the annual Valentine’s Day tradition in the town of Nezahualcoyotl.
Couples of various ages said yes in the town’s main square, some to save money for their new start in life and others to make their relationships official.
“Marriages are expensive” newlyweds Rosalin Ruith told AFP. Wearing a white wedding dress, the 28-year-old sealed her love with her two-year-older partner in a “more economical way” with this year’s mass wedding, the “matrimonio collectivo”.
37-year-old Yosimar Carrasco and his peer Alejandra Godinez were motivated to participate in the mass wedding by the desire to have a “different experience”, while for 40-year-olds Pilar Hernandez and Susana Innocente it was the opportunity for an LGBTI couple to enjoy “equal rights ».
Applause erupted in the square when the registrar invited the newlyweds to exchange kisses. In a similar mass ceremony on Valentine’s Day in Nicaragua, 200 couples were united in marriage on the shores of Managua’s Lake Xolotlan.
