Mexicans in working poverty at its lowest level in 17 years: BBVA

Mexico City., At the end of the second quarter of the year, the population in a situation of working poverty, those whose income cannot afford to buy the basic basket, was at its lowest level in the last 17 years, according to a BBVA study, with figures taken from the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).

According to the data, at the end of June, the percentage of the Mexican population living in working poverty was 35 percent, and this percentage is the lowest since the second quarter of 2007 and the second lowest since the first quarter of 2005.

According to BBVA, this percentage is also 1.7 percentage points lower than the last record of the population in a situation of working poverty that existed before the health and economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic began in the first quarter of 2020.

In comparison with the previous quarter, that is, from January to March, the population in a situation of working poverty had a reduction of 0.8 percentage points, going from 35.8 percent to 35 percent.

He added that in one year, that is, from the second quarter of 2023 to the same period this year, the percentage of the population in this situation decreased by 2.8 percentage points, while from April to June of last year it was 37.8 percent. It turns out that this is attributed to an increase in employment and an increase in people’s labor income of 8.9 percent (due to effects greater than the increase in the cost of the food basket that occurred in the period).

The lowest level in rural areas

BBVA stated that 47.6 percent of the rural population was living in working poverty at the end of the second quarter of the year, a percentage that is 2 percentage points lower than the previous quarter (49.6 percent) and 2.7 points lower than the same period last year.

Thus, the percentage of the population in a situation of working poverty in rural areas is the lowest since records began in the first quarter of 2005, when the registration of the population in working poverty began.

“As regards the difference between the proportion of working poverty in urban and rural areas, from the first to the second quarter of the year, it decreased by 1.6 percentage points in absolute terms, going from 18.3 to 16.7 points. But this level of gap is not one of the lowest that has been recorded in the period,” he explained.

The results are presented at a time when, from January 2020 to July 2024, the cost of the rural food basket grew by 43.7 percent and the urban basket by 42.2 percent, in an environment that has been marked by high levels of inflation at a global level.
