Mexicans in NY want justice done in the García Luna case

Inside a federal court in Brooklyn, Genaro García Luna was facing the trial against him for the second day on Tuesday.

The former head of security for Mexico faces charges of accepting bribes to help cartels send drugs to the United States.

“We want justice from our country, that there was a lot of corruption in the ancestor governments,” said Rosalía Monroy.

García Luna is accused of accepting millions, using his position to share information with the Sinaloa Cartel and assist in the passage of drugs through the security agency he oversaw.

His defense maintains that the former official dedicated himself for years to imprisoning cartel leaders who now seek revenge by testifying against him.

One of them, Sergio Villarreal Barragán, alias El Grande, a former police officer turned cartel leader, testified in this first phase of the trial that when García Luna took office, the cartel was able to expand and obtain greater profits.

“A witness alias El Grande, saying that they gave him a lot of money, that the trucks were not enough to put all that money that they put in trucks. Listen to him, you know that when I heard that I was outraged, while my people in Mexico had no nor for a kilo of tortillas or bread to give to their children,” added Monroy.

García Luna is the highest-ranking Mexican official to face trial in a US on drug charges.

“I would like justice to be done, for him to put the names on the table, for him to actually tell the reality of Mexico, all the corruption that has been experienced,” said Ada Ovana.

The trial is expected to take place over the next eight weeks.
