HOUSTON – A Mexican woman who is on the verge of death fulfilled her dream of seeing her mother again after 26 years. The process came to a successful conclusion with the mediation of Telemundo Houston Responde.
Eliázar Montiel Cruz, 56, was diagnosed with terminal cancer less than a month ago, after she ended up hospitalized in the hospital Ben Taub due to pneumonia.
The woman, who was treated for breast cancer two years ago and had to undergo a mastectomy (removal of one of her breasts), received the bad news – after several medical tests – that the cancer had spread throughout her body, but unfortunately this time it affected her brain and lungs.
For this reason, one of her sisters contacted her Telemundo Houston Responds with the purpose of seeking help that would allow her mother to come to Houston to share the last moments of her daughter’s life.
Kewan Gibson was honored by the Highland Park Fire Department.
Telemundo Houston Responds contacted the lawyer Naimeh Salemwho served as a bridge with the Democratic federal congressman Al Greenwho finally helped Ms. Ofelia Cruz obtain a humanitarian visa that would allow her to urgently travel to Houston this Sunday.
Green has recently been able to obtain other humanitarian visas for people in emergency situations, in situations similar to the case of Mrs. Montiel Cruz.
Mrs. Ofeliz Cruz, 80 years old, met with her daughter in the last hours at the hospital Memorial Hermann Katy’s hospital, where she was transferred after receiving the fateful diagnosis.
She managed to travel with her daughter from Mexico and after 26 years she was able to hug Eliázar again, whom she found in the hospital bed.
Maritza Villatoro, 37, was arrested, according to authorities, for allegedly performing dental work without a Texas license.
In a conversation with Telemundo Houston, Cruz was blunt in her request. “I just ask God to get my daughter out of that bed,” emphasized the woman, who entered the U.S. through the port of entry in Matamoros (Tamaulipas) on Sunday morning with a 12-day stay permit.
Eliázar herself also spoke with Telemundo Houston Responde, acknowledging that in the face of the tragedy she is experiencing and the reunion with her mother, “she has not been able to cry,” but that “it is a joy to be able to see my mother again.”
