EPAPolice at the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador

Mexican President López Obrador has severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador. He said this late last night (local time) after Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican embassy in the capital Quito.
The former Vice President of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, was arrested there. Since the end of last year, Glass has been in the Mexican embassy where he sought political asylum. Yesterday he was granted this, after which the police in Ecuador raided the embassy. López Obrador called Glas’ arrest a “flagrant violation of international law and an infringement on Mexican independence.”
The Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs announced on X that he would sever diplomatic relations:
Glass is suspected of bribery and corruption in Ecuador. He was already serving a prison sentence for corruption until last November. After his release, another arrest warrant was issued for him.
Tensions increased
Earlier this week, tensions between the two countries were high when the Mexican president suggested that the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Villavicencio was the reason why President Daniel Noboa had won. In response, the Mexican ambassador in the Ecuadorian capital Quito was made a persona declared non grata.

“It is no surprise that Mexico is now cutting diplomatic ties. The action has been widely condemned. According to international treaties, you should never invade a country’s embassy.
Tensions were already rising between the two countries due to Lopéz Obrador’s statements. The left-wing president is very outspoken, not at all diplomatic and does not mince his words. Certainly not about ideological opponents such as Noboa. That is also why international collaborations do not get off the ground in Latin America. Left-wing and right-wing presidents come to blows with ideological opponents.
This will lead to nothing more than mudslinging at a high diplomatic level. Ecuador’s action will also be condemned by the international community.”
