Mexican President does not recognize Maduro’s victory and says he is waiting for the minutes – Diario La Página – 2024-08-27 04:11:56

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is not yet willing to recognise the re-election of Nicolás Maduro in the July 28 elections in Venezuela.

“We are going to wait for the minutes to be released, because yesterday the Electoral Tribunal of Venezuela said that President Maduro won the election and, at the same time, recommended that the minutes be released. I think there is a date for the resolution, so we are going to wait,” AMLO said at his morning press conference.

The Mexican leader has not joined the joint rejection that Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay made on Friday (23.8. 2024) to the ruling of the Venezuelan Supreme Court that certified Maduro’s disputed victory.

No contacts with Maduro
On the other hand, López Obrador commented that he was “respectful” of the decisions made in other countries. He stated that there is a “bunch” of disqualifications and condemnations of the Venezuelan Government. “But, we have to act, I repeat, in accordance with our Constitution,” he concluded.

He also said that he has not had any communication with Nicolás Maduro during the post-election crisis: “No (I have not spoken with him), that is what our adversaries think, imagine, and spread slanderously. We are very respectful. I just had a phone call with President Lula and President Petro on the subject of Venezuela and we set out our position,” López Obrador clarified.
