The New York Abandoned Infant Protection Law has provisions to address the abandonment of a newborn and protect their welfare. The legislation seeks to ensure that babies are not abandoned and can receive proper care.

In New York, abandoning a newborn is considered a crime. If a person abandons a newborn baby in a public place or in circumstances where the child may be in danger, he or she may face criminal charges. The specific penalty may vary depending on the circumstances and the severity of the abandonment.

In addition to the criminal consequences, New York also offers options for parents who are unable to care for their newborns to safely and legally surrender them.

The “safe delivery of babies act” allows parents to surrender their newborn babies to hospitals, police stations and fire stations without facing legal prosecution for abandonment. The goal of this law is to protect the life and well-being of newborns and provide safe options for parents in difficult situations.
