The decision of the Mexican government to have former Vice President Jorge Glas as a “guest” in its embassy in Quito, generates strong criticism from political groups opposing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
That is the case of Mariana Gómez del Campo, legislator for the National Action Party (PAN), who described the asylum of Glas as “shameful”, who thanks to it is freed, at least for now, from the prison order that weighs against him.
Gómez del Campo was interviewed on the program “Del Día a la Noche”, on Radio Centro, which was hosted by Carlos de Tomaso, where she expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of her country’s government regarding Glas.
“Mr. Glas is a fugitive from Ecuador’s justice, not a protégé,” he indicated.
“It is enough to remember, the parliamentarian said, that the former vice president faces 19 criminal proceedings for corruption cases, and that he has two final sentences, both linked to bribes delivered by the Brazilian company Odebrecht.”
He also regretted that Mexico is currently known for protecting people prosecuted in its countries, as it already did with the former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales.
“Protecting criminals and the ‘buddies’ of the Puebla Group will affect relations (of Mexico) with Ecuador,” Gómez del Campo concluded.
Glas took refuge in the diplomatic legation on December 17, following a prison order issued for alleged embezzlement, in the Manabí Reconstruction Case. Furthermore, the Habeas Corpus issued in his favor had been annulled, which allowed him to leave the Latacunga Prison before serving the entire sentence in the Bribery Case.
