The Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro won the first stage of the 66th Vuelta a Asturias this Friday by winning alone in Pola de Lena after attacking five kilometers from the finish line.
In this way, the UAE Team Emirates member was placed as the overall leader, ahead of his teammate, the Polish Rafal Majka, who reached the finish line a minute later. The Uruguayan Eric Antonio Fagúndez (Burgos-BH) finished in third position on the course that began in Oviedo.
This is the 20-year-old’s first victory since the Tour Down Under, held in Australia last January, and which is one of the most important races at the beginning of the campaign. In this competition he won a stage and finished third in the general classification.
Del Toro won the Tour del Porvenir last summer, and from there he has managed to stand out and become one of the revelation cyclists in the international peloton.
In both the Tirreno Adriatico and the Tour of the Basque Country, the tricolor was the second best youngster, which is why the UAE Team Emirates decided just a few days ago to extend its contract until 2029, since initially, the link expired in 2026 .
This Saturday the longest stage of the Asturian round will be held -200 kilometers-, which will take the runners from Ribera de Arriba to Ribadesella.
