Mexico City, Sep 13 (EFE).- Various health organizations in Mexico, including the Mexican Association of Vaccinology, asked the Mexican Government to include updated vaccines against covid-19 in the following winter campaign, due to its wide spectrum. of virus variants.

The letter, also signed by the Associations of Pediatric Infectology, Mexican Pediatrics, among others, comes after the Mexican authorities reported that the Cuban biologics, Abdala, and the Russian, Sputnik, will be applied during the winter season.

Although, the positioning, which also includes the National Confederation of Pediatrics of Mexico and the Mexican Academy of Pediatrics, recognizes that these vaccines with the ancestral strain of Sars-CoV-2 show strong effectiveness against serious illness or death from this virus.

In the letter they maintain that the omicron variant is the predominant one to date worldwide and is associated with a less severe disease than the ancestral strain of covid-19; However, they stated that since omicron is more transmissible and circulates faster, it is associated with a large number of hospitalizations and deaths.

“While vaccine efficacy remains relatively high and is well maintained over time against severe disease, protection against mild disease and infection declines rapidly with time since the last vaccination,” the associations added. private health.

The petition was addressed to the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López, and the federal attorney for the protection of children and adolescents, Oliver Castañeda. .

In their letter, health expert organizations insisted that as effectiveness declines, older adults and people with comorbidities continue to present the highest risk of mortality due to the Omicron variant.

In addition, they asked for the application of complete vaccine schedules against Covid-19 in the Mexican pediatric population over six years of age.

“The competent authorities in matters of protection of the rights of girls, boys and adolescents are urged to do what is necessary within the scope of their powers to guarantee their right to health,” the letter reads.

In the same sense, they demanded that vaccines against covid-19 that contain variants be authorized and included for use as a reinforcement of vaccination from six months of age in Mexico.

Recently, the Mexican Government announced the purchase of more than 10 million vaccines, without disclosing the brand of origin, which would be added to the 9.3 million doses that it will have in the next winter season.

Of this inventory, the Secretary of Health, Alcocer, detailed this Tuesday that 5.3 million are of Cuban origin, which are already stored in the Biological and Reagent Laboratory of Mexico (Birmex).

While the remaining 4 million would arrive from Russia in the coming months of October and November to be applied to the Mexican population next winter. EFE
