Carlos Sainz and Ferrari have confirmed their strong form and can hope for another triumph a week after Austin’s double victory. Sainz took pole position in qualifying in Mexico in 1:15.946 minutes for today’s race at 9 p.m. (in the live ticker at sportschau.de).
For Sainz it is the sixth pole of his career. Teammate Charles Leclerc, last winner in Austin ahead of Sainz, finished fourth in qualifying.
World champion Max Verstappen secured an advantage in the title race with Lando Norris. The Dutchman finished second in the Red Bull ahead of third-placed Norris. The Dutchman has won the race near Mexico City in the Red Bull for the past three years, but he has been waiting for his next Grand Prix success since June 23rd this season. In the standings, Verstappen still has a 57-point lead before the 20th of 24 races this season.
Hülkenberg tenth in qualifying, Perez experiences debacle at home game
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, who is fighting for his future at Red Bull, experienced a debacle at the home game of all places. The Mexican complained about braking problems in slow sections of the track in Q1 and couldn’t get past 18th on the grid. Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas starts in tenth place, still in the top ten.
