Mexican Government’s Evaluation of Comirnaty and Spikevax Vaccines for Availability in Pharmacies

The Comirnaty vaccines from Pfizer and Spikevax Monovalente from Moderna are in the evaluation phase to obtain their health registration by the New Molecules Committee (CMN) of Cofepris.

The Government of Mexico made the decision that several biologicals against the Covid 19 virus were analyzed for their next distribution and sale in various pharmacies in the country.as long as they are approved and considered effective by Cofepris.

At the moment, are in the evaluation phase two notable vaccines from American pharmaceutical companies Comirnaty from Pfizer and Spikevax Monovalent from Moderna, which have obtained a favorable response to obtain their health registration from the New Molecules Committee (CMN) of Cofepris.

In view of the above, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that its commercialization is planned to begin in the last weeks of November. However, there is a doubt that has arisen among Mexicans regarding vaccines.

How much could Covid vaccines cost in pharmacies?

These biologicals in pharmacies in the United States have an approximate cost of 21 dollars, an average of 370 pesos according to the current exchange rate, however, during one of the morning conferences of the president, the general director of the National Center for Preventive and Disease Control (Cenaprece), Ruy López Ridaura mentioned that the cost of them in Mexico could range up to 5 thousand pesos.

Given this, López Obrador was surprised and recalled the importance of making the vaccine accessible to low-income sectors, which is why he stressed that biological vaccines should be between 500 and 900 pesos, no more.

Although a promising future is seen for both vaccines, their availability in pharmacies will still face additional testing. According to López Ridaura, companies will have to provide more data for their final evaluation, which could be resolved within a period of three to four weeks.

With these measures, the government seeks to guarantee that vaccination is accessible to all social strata.
