Mexican Food Takes Over United States Restaurants: New Study Shows Widespread Influence

Mexican food is present in 85% of the counties in the United States and the states of New York and New Jersey are where they have the most establishments, including ‘food trucks’ or carts.

It is the states of California and Texas that lead in terms of the number of restaurants in their counties, but the presence of Mexican food is so widespread nationwide that one in 10 restaurants is for this type of food.

“Mexican culture is widely established in American restaurants,” notes the Pew Research Center analysis. “About 11% of restaurants in the United States serve Mexican food”.

The report adds that in states like New York or Florida, there are restaurants serving other types of Hispanic or Latin food that even offer Mexican food.

Many non-Mexican restaurants also offer Mexican food, the opposite occurs less frequently,” the report says. “For example, 38% of Salvadoran restaurants and 25% of Honduran restaurants in the United States also serve Mexican food, but only 3% of Mexican restaurants serve other types of Hispanic or Latin food.”

Regarding the type of food, Pew finds that 22% of restaurants nationwide are “fast food”, 12% specialize in tacos8% are classified as ‘food trucks’ or carts, and 6% offer “Tex-Mex” food.

As for prices, most of these establishments are considered low cost.

“Among restaurants with price data, 61% of Mexican restaurants are rated a ‘dollar sign’ on Yelp’s four-point price scale,” the report states. “Less than 1% of all Mexican restaurants nationwide (only 251 in total) have a rating of three or four dollar signs on the Yelp scale.”

The report resulted from an analysis of information on millions of places of interest around the world, and the user review site Yelp.
