Deputy Gerardo Fernández Norona This Monday he filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) of Mexico against the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboafor the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito occurred last April 5.
Furthermore, in the complaint he requested the arrest and extradition of Noboa to Mexico to be prosecuted for the crime of kidnapping against the former vice president of Ecuador. Jorge Glas.
Fernández Noroña, who is coordinator of the spokespersons for the official presidential candidate’s campaign Claudia Sheinbaumrequested that the president of Ecuador be investigated as the intellectual author of the raid on the Mexican diplomatic headquarters, under the argument that the Embassies are national jurisdiction and the FGR is competent to prosecute those responsible for the crimes at their headquarters.
“It is a very serious violation, not only of international laws, but of Mexican legislation itself, which applies to any Mexican embassy in the world.”The deputy told the media after the complaint.
“The jurisdiction that governs the Mexican Embassy is our laws and under those laws Jorge Glas was kidnapped, he was kidnapped with violence, there are the videos and the evidence, there are the Ecuadorian government’s own statements”he added.
This Monday, Noboa assured that he does not regret having ordered the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glasformer vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), to whom the Mexican Government had given asylum hours before. Glas was found guilty of the crime of bribery and is currently being investigated for an alleged case of embezzlement of public funds. His name has also been linked to members of international organized crime in judicial cases handled by the Ecuadorian Justice.
“I have no regrets,” said Noboa in an interview given last week to the Australian channel SBS and broadcast this Monday, the president’s first interaction with the press since the beginning of this crisis with Mexico.
Faced with the almost unanimous condemnation of the international community for breaking the inviolability of a diplomatic headquarters, Noboa admitted that “it was a very difficult decision to make,” but that he did it because his Government considers that Mexico was the first to violate international conventions.
Regarding the way he plans to solve the crisis with Mexico, the Ecuadorian president said that he will seek to have lunch with López Obrador.
“I’ll invite López Obrador to have ceviche, and we can probably also eat some tacos and talk, when he’s ready.”he stated.
The irruption of state forces into the Mexican Embassy led the López Obrador Government to break relations with Ecuador and denounce it to the International Court of Justice in The Hague considering that their sovereignty and also international law were violated. EFE (I)
