Metz. End of the formation of future priests in Lorraine

While it was carried out exclusively in Lorraine – in Nancy and Metz -, the training of future priests will now mainly take place at the Issy-les-Moulineaux seminary. Their course of study, carried out over five years, is divided into three stages called “cycles”.

The first, made up of two years of discernment currently organized in Nancy, will be established in Metz. The second, made up of three years of philosophical and theological training, will leave Metz to settle at the seminary of Issy-les-Moulineaux. The last stage, which is that of pastoral integration, will be organized at the local major seminary after their ordination.

A vocation crisis

The bishops of Lorraine and Franche-Comté took this decision because of the lack of candidates, for a profession that is less and less popular. This year, 17 of them are studying at the Major Seminary of Lorraine, five of which are being formed for the diocese of Metz. Among these students are a Vietnamese, a Togolese, a Malagasy, a Lebanese and a Nigerien. Now the Major seminary of Metz will only concern itself with the year of discernment and the continuous formation of priests.
