Metz. Do you know where the Moselle flows into the Rhine?

The Moselle, our Moselle, that which takes its source at the Bussang pass , in the Vosges, flows into the Rhine at Koblenz, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Our river will therefore have crossed three countries, France, Luxembourg and Germany, and traveled 560 km before returning to the Rhine. In Koblenz, the entire geography of the city is organized around the confluence. But in the eyes of the people of Koblenz, it is much more than a natural feature. It is a cultural celebration. They also speak of “the meeting of mother Moselle and father Rhine”.

An iconic monument has been built at the point of the confluence. This is the Deutsches Eck, the “German corner” in French. A huge statue of Emperor William on horseback sits there, surrounded by a colonnade with the coats of arms of all the German Länder. This site represents the unity of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1990, the emblems of the new Länder of East Germany were added to it. In Koblenz, it is at the Deutsches Eck that the inhabitants like to gather for the big celebrations, during the victories of the Nationalmannschaft in particular.

To highlight this natural and heritage site of great value, the City of Koblenz commissioned a cable car in 2010. It connects the lower town to the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, on the heights of the city. 118 m above the Rhine, the cabins offer a breathtaking view of the marriage of our Moselle with the Rhine.
