New York. Francisco Lindor hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, his last important swing in an extraordinary season full of similar feats, and the New York Mets reached the MLB National League Championship Series for the first time in nine years with a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Puerto Rican Edwin Díaz struck out Kyle Schwarber with two runners on board to seal the elimination of the Phillies, New York’s bitter rivals, in the fourth game of a maximum of five.
The Mets settled a playoff series at home for the first time in 24 years. Immediately afterwards, in a noisy locker room, the first champagne celebration took place.
The New York team settled this National League division series 3-1 on aggregate against the Phillies who started as favorites and had not been left out of the playoffs at this point since 2021.
The Mets will now fight against the winner of the series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, who dominate 2-1 and can seal their classification this Wednesday.
The elimination in the division series is bitter for the Phillies, champions of the Eastern Division, who won 95 games and finished six ahead of the Mets, who instead barely snuck in with the wild card.
It was also a disappointing setback, after advancing to the 2022 World Series and then losing games six and seven of the 2023 National Championship Series at home to Arizona.
After falling short again in October, Bryce Harper and the Phillies are still seeking the franchise’s third championship in history.
Detroit takes advantage against Cleveland
In the American League, the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 at the start of the day and took a 2-1 lead in the playoff series.
The Tigers, who have not competed in the playoffs since 2014, are just one win away from advancing to the championship series.
The 44,885 fans at Comerica Park in Detroit, their largest attendance for a postseason game, thoroughly enjoyed a team that continues to break the odds.
The Detroit franchise, sixth in the American League, already swept the favorite Houston Astros in the wild card round.
And the Guardians, second seed in the conference, were held scoreless this Wednesday for the second time in a row, after another 3-0 victory on Monday in Cleveland.
Facing veteran starter Alex Cobb, who had not pitched in the last month, the locals opened the scoring in the first inning with a run by Parker Meadows after a single by Riley Greene.
Jake Rogers took advantage of Matt Vierling’s sacrifice fly to increase the lead in the third inning, after which Cleveland retired Cobb, whom injuries have allowed only four starts this season at age 37.
Spencer Torkelson’s double to left field drove in Colt Keith’s final run in the sixth inning.
The Tigers, who had tied the series on Monday thanks to a huge three-run homer by Kerry Carpenter in the final inning, will now have two chances to qualify for their first championship series since 2013.
