New York / Berlin (MH) – The New York Metropolitan Opera will not start the 2020/21 season until December 31st due to the corona pandemic. “Because of the enormous organizational complexity of our schedule, we have no choice but to cancel our fall season,” explained managing director Peter Gelb on Monday evening (local time). It is simply not possible to open the Opera House in September while the distance rules apply. The health and safety of ensemble members and audiences would have top priority.

The Met plans to hold a gala evening on New Year’s Eve, details to be announced later. The new productions of Verdi’s “Aida” and Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel” planned for autumn will be postponed to later seasons. Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” and “Don Giovanni” are also not being re-produced; instead, earlier productions are returning.
In February 2021, when the Metropolitan Opera was originally supposed to be closed, there will be additional performances of Puccini’s “La Bohéme”, Bizet’s “Carmen” and Verdi’s “La traviata”. The in-house premiere of Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking” under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin remains in the program as planned. The music director will conduct a total of 26 performances over the course of the newly designed season, including Strauss’ “Die Frau ohne Schatten” and Gounod’s “Roméo und Julia”.
