Already set up on the A25 motorway and “satisfactory” according to the prefecture of the North, a system of dynamic regulation from circulation, in particular via the speed, is now implemented on theA22 motorway in the metropolis of Lille since Monday, March 8, 2021. A similar system should also emerge on A1 and A23 motorways.
What is it about ?
Concretely, it is a question of adapting the speed limits according to the traffic. Between the Belgian border and the town of Wasquehal, there are now five gantries that display the mandatory speed to be respected, over 8 kilometers.
When the traffic is fluid, the speed of 110km / h is indicated on the signs, as is already the case. However, as soon as the traffic becomes denser, the speed will be lowered in steps of 20 km / h:
- 90 km / h, in the event of a traffic jam, at peak hours in the morning of working days and on Sunday evening;
- 70 km / h, at any time of the day and night, in the event of an incident or work.
In addition, lights can be activated on the entry ramps, as soon as the traffic increases on the axis. Objective: “to regulate the entries on the motorway according to the traffic to improve the insertion of vehicles and to delay the appearance of the traffic jams”, indicates the Direction des routes du Nord.

Similar projects on the A1 and the A23
The implementation of this device is to try to avoid traffic congestion but also “to act on atmospheric pollution, recalls the prefect Michel Lalande. We have chosen to start with the A22, but similar projects will be implemented on the A1 and A23 motorways, ”he announces.
Hoped for in 2022, they would include speed regulation from Dourges to Ronchin in the Lille-Paris direction and from Ronchin to Seclin in the Paris-Lille direction. Access control via traffic lights would be implemented at the Carvin, Seclin and Lesquin interchanges.
On the A23, this would be speed regulation in the direction Valenciennes – Lille.
On the A25 motorway, where this system is already in place, the average time saving for motorists is 6 minutes, for journeys estimated on average at around 20 minutes.
