Metro-North to increase train service just before Labor Day – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – The Metro-North Railroad transportation system announced Sunday that beginning Sunday, August 29, there will be an increase in train service of 82% from pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, the agency announced that the weekend service will make a full return.

In addition, direct service between Grand Central Terminal and Wassaic and New Canaan will resume, as will ferry service on the Hudson line.

The Aug. 29 service increase builds on that by adding 102 more trains to the schedule: 25 on the Hudson Line, 37 on the Harlem Line and 40 on the New Haven Line.

All of these increases in service and service options come as Metro-North prepares for the return to schools and offices after Labor Day.

“Throughout this pandemic we have matched service levels with passenger demand and as we prepare for more people to return to the office and school, we are increasing service to meet that demand,” said Catherine Rinaldi. , president of Metro-North Railroad. “Our weekend passenger numbers have recovered faster, so we are comfortable restoring weekend service to pre-pandemic levels, and we hope to do the same with service Monday through Friday in the future. near”.

Metro-North began a gradual increase in the essential services plan that was in effect during the height of the pandemic by adding trains on June 15, 2020 and June 22, 2020 that increased service to 63% of services prior to the pandemic. On April 12, the railroad restored weekend service between Wassaic and Southeast on the Harlem Upper Line.

Overall weekend ridership has rebounded faster than weekday riders on Metro-North trains.

In the spring, weekend ridership rose to about 60-70% from pre-pandemic levels when the Hudson Valley, New York City and Connecticut regions reopened. Weekend riders remain at around 50% of pre-pandemic levels, and with the arrival of the fall season, Metro-North is providing additional service to traverse the region to meet the increase in passenger demand.

On June 21, Metro-North improved its peak service and added 24 trains during peak periods on its three lines east of the Hudson River.
