Metro: Extension studies are progressing – Which areas benefit? –

The studies and tender procedures for the extensions of the Athens Metro are ongoing.

The most mature extension is that of Line 2 to Ilion, approximately 4 km long with 3 stations (Palatiani, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos). The expansion and modernization of the Eleonas train station as well as the construction of an underground parking area have been included in the same project.

“Palatiani” station

“Palatiani” station is located at the intersection of Thebes and Andreas Papandreou streets and has 2 entrances on either side of Thebes Street.

The “Ilion” Station is located at the intersection of Thebes and Elaion streets and has 2 entrances on either side of Thebes street and provision for connection-transfer of passengers with the homonymous Station of the future extension of Line 4 to Petroupoli.

“Agios Nikolaos” Station is located under the section of the homonymous street and part of the landscaped green area located between Paramythia, Olynthos, Zitsis and Ag. Nikolaou.

Upgrading systems in the Metro

Given that the future operation of the Extension, as well as the other current needs, simultaneously make it necessary to find and build additional depot spaces to serve the trains, the extension of the Eleonas Depot to a neighboring area of approximately 20 acres in the corner will proceed at the same time of Agia Anni and Pieria streets.

With the future operation of the extension, it also becomes necessary to upgrade-replace certain Electro-Mechanical Systems in a large part or even in the entirety of Lines 2 and 3 of the Metro, without which their further extension will not be possible.

For this reason, the digital data transmission system will be upgraded or replaced in all the stations of Lines 2 and 3.

Modifications to the specific systems will require new equipment and software both at the Control Center at the Constitution and locally at stations, wells, etc.

However, their connection to the current systems is planned to be done without any interruption of Lines 2 and 3.

In May 2023, the first stage of the competition started and has already been completed, and the second stage will soon follow with the submission of financial offers.

When does work start and when does it end?

The estimated start of construction is 2026 and the start of operation in 2031. For this particular Line 2, the future extension with 3 stations to Kamatero, Zephyri and Acharnes is being studied.

A branch of Line 4 from “Evangelismos” station to PYRKAL has been studied, with networking on Lines 2 and 3. The branch will be part of the future Line 5 to Haidari.

Line 2 extension to Glyfada

The study for the extension of Line 2 from the existing Elliniko station to Glyfada with a total tunnel length of 4.5 km and three new stations is at a preliminary stage.

The first is located in Ano Glyfada, below Macedonia Square, the second at the junction of Vouliagmeni and Grigoriou Lambrakis and the third and last in Agios Konstantinou Square in Glyfada.

According to the responsible actors of Hellenic Metro, the scalability of the Athens Metro is a given, within the framework of the maturity of the studies and under the condition of financing.

Future expansions

The design of extensions is another important part of the company’s object.

In Athens, the person in charge of this level of planning is the OASA.

At the present time, he is implementing the transportation study of Attica, from which the planning, feasibility and sustainability of the extensions of the Metro network will be derived.

The extension of Line 2 south to Glyfada and the extension of the Metro to Kallithea have been studied by the Hellenic Metro in a preliminary stage, ensuring the connection of the SNFCC (Niarchos Foundation) with the Metro network.

The extension of Line 4 to the west, from the “Alsos Veikou” station to the municipalities of Ilio and Petroupoli, has been investigated, which will pass through the municipalities of Nea Ionia and Nea Philadelphia, with the possibility of transferring to Lines 1 and 2. Likewise, the extension of Line 4 north, from “Katehaki” station to Marousi, Pefki and Lykovrysi, with the possibility of transferring to Line 1.

Also, a branch of Line 4 from the “Evangelismos” station to PYRKAL, with networking on Lines 2 and 3, has been studied. The branch will form part of the future Line 5 to Haidari.

Finally, the extension of Line 1 to the north, from the “Kifisia” station, towards Nea Erythraia and the National Highway (Varymbobi junction) is being investigated.
