A study found that an ingredient in diabetes medication helps prevent weight gain, one of the side effects of adolescents taking medication to treat bipolar disorder.
The research team at Northwell Health, the largest medical institution in the U.S., announced that metformin, a diabetes treatment ingredient, can prevent ‘weight gain’, one of the side effects of bipolar disorder treatment. Bipolar disorder treatments are effective in improving mental health, but have side effects such as increased blood pressure and glucose, increased appetite, and weight gain. The research results were announced at the ‘American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Symposium’ held in New York on the 27th (local time).
Metformin is a commonly used ingredient in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Recently, research results have shown that it can prevent or delay the onset of dementia.
The research team analyzed the effects of metformin on 1,565 patients aged 8 to 19 with bipolar disorder. All study participants were encouraged to improve their lifestyles, including eating healthy and exercising. Half of the participants were randomly prescribed metformin.
Through short-term follow-up data of six months, the research team found that metformin was effective in preventing weight gain and in some cases reducing weight in patients. Other than some study participants reporting symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, there were no serious side effects.
The research team said, “Metformin does not cause weight loss, but it has the effect of suppressing appetite and encouraging patients to maintain a healthy diet and exercise more,” adding, “It has the advantage of being safe, effective, and very inexpensive.”
