Meter-high lava fragments destroy buildings on La Palma

This stream is in some places as high as a three-storey building, reports the Spanish Institute of Geology and Mining. The new lava flow could form after the northern part of the crater collapsed yesterday. The lava flowed towards the village of Todoque. This place had already been evacuated, and the flood destroyed the last buildings that were still standing.

Hundreds of houses destroyed

Since the eruption started, hundreds of houses have been swallowed by boiling hot magma, and the volcano continues to spew.

There are volcanic eruptions about sixty times a year, but how do they actually occur? We explain that in this video below.

An ash cloud about 3.5 kilometers high formed near the volcano yesterday. Lightning bolts were also visible. This electric charge would have been created by ash particles colliding with each other.

Since the eruption began on September 19, lava flows have destroyed nearly 1,200 buildings and over 150 hectares of farmland on the Canary Island. The damage is estimated at around 400 million euros.
