A large meteor briefly lit up southern Norway on Sunday (25/7), brightening the Norwegian night sky with a huge roar.

Experts predict the meteor hit the earth and fell not far from Oslo.

Reports of meteor sightings began to arrive around 01.00 am. Video circulating on social media shows at least one bright flash lighting up the harbor in Holmestrand, south of Oslo.

The Norwegian Meteor Network revealed preliminary data suggesting a meteorite may have hit Earth in the Finnemarka area, 60 kilometers west of Oslo.

The meteor was traveling at a speed of 15-20 km per second and illuminated the night sky for about five to six seconds.

There were no reports of damage or frightened people, as happened in 2013 when a meteorite shot across Russia and exploded over Chelyabinsk.
