A bright ball of fire caused an uproar over Florida on Tuesday night (April 13th, 2021). More than 100 people reported on the website “American Meteor Society“A fireball at around 4.18 am (CEST), which corresponds to around 10:18 pm local time. What was that?
Meteor on April 13th, 2020 over Florida: Spectacular videos on the net show explosion
“Looks like a fireball meteor in South Florida,” writes WISN meteorologist Mark Baden on Twitter for a video of the astronomical spectacle. In the short clip you can see a flare that races across the sky and finally explodes. For a fraction of a second, the sky becomes dazzlingly light.

Under the tweet, those interested in astronomy wonder about the properties of the burning rock. “It’s crazy! The meteor is probably the size of a pea or even smaller and shines so brightly,” it says in one comment below the video. “Probably a bit bigger than that with this big flash, but still very small,” replies Baden. A user asks how big a meteor would have to be to create such an explosion. For this, too, the meteorologist one answer: “About the size of a car.”
Bizarre theory! Did the asteroid GW4 collide with Earth in 2021?
“I saw it in Orlando! So huge and fiery! It’s good that people captured it on video. My family already thought I was crazy,” wrote anotherTwitter user and even suspects an asteroid behind the fireball. On April 12th, 2021 the asteroid 2021 GW4 was supposed to scrape very close to the earth. According to the Center for Near Earth Object Studies, it should move on the earth up to a distance of 19,816 kilometers. That corresponds to only 0.07 times the distance to the moon. The estimated size of Baden would also fit. The asteroid is said to have had a diameter of 3.5 to 7.7 meters.
NBC2 meteorologist Pat Cavlin also suspects that the flare was the asteroid. “The asteroid 2021 GW4 was supposed to pass very close to the earth tonight … The actual flyby was then probably a little closer than was predicted. Dozens of videos from all over Florida show a huge lightning bolt in the sky as GW4 (or part of it) was on became a meteor, “says his tweet.
☄️Asteroid 2021 GW4 was forecast to make a VERY close pass with Earth tonight… although the actual pass seems to have been a little closer than forecasted ????

But astronomers contradict the meteorologist’s assumption. “The fireball in Florida was not GW4 in 2021. It was just a meteor,” writes Michael Busch on Twitter. “The approach of # 2021GW4 to Earth high above the extreme northern hemisphere on the sunny side of the planet was about 18 hours ago. The meteor that is being made into a fireball over #Florida was in a completely different orbit, in time and space spatially well offset. “
#2021GW4 made its closest approach to Earth high over the far northern hemisphere, on the sunward side of the planet, just about 18 hours ago as of this writing.
