Meteor Hunting Ahead of Indonesian Independence Day

At the end of July 2021, I was getting ready to work on an infographic on astronomical phenomena in August 2021. I got the material from one of the researchers in my office at the Space Science Center (Pussainsa) LAPAN.

While thinking about the idea and also reading the phenomenon, it turns out that there is one interesting phenomenon. What is that phenomenon? It turned out that there was a Kappa Cygnid Meteor Shower which was active from August 3 to 25, 2021 and its peak occurred on August 18 at 07.00 WITA / 08.00 WITA / 09.00 WIT.

I also asked one of the researchers at Pussainsa about meteors. So a meteor is a bright flash of light when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and burns up. A meteor shower is a large number of meteors that appear to move from a single point in the sky. This event is caused by the collision of the Earth with meteoroid particles in its path.

I also opened a space science education site (http://edukasi.sains.lapan.go.id/article/fenomena-astronomis-agustus-2021/304) where Andi Pangerang as a Pussainsa researcher explained that the kappa cygnid meteor shower came from asteroid dust debris (361861) 2008 ED69.

This meteor shower can be seen from the North-Northeast since 20 minutes after sunset until 02:20 local time the next day.

Oh yes, this meteor shower can be seen from all over Indonesia, you know as long as it is free from light pollution, air pollution and any obstructions, whether buildings, buildings, mountains, trees, and others with the naked eye.

Come on, let’s enjoy the beauty of the meteor shower while celebrating the 76th independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
