Meteor flashes in the sky above Belgium

Surveillance

Anyone who looked at the sky on Wednesday evening may have spotted a meteor. The debris that entered our atmosphere from the solar system at enormous speed was visible above large parts of Belgium and the Netherlands around 10 p.m. The meteor was filmed by the public observatory Mira in Grimbergen. “The speeds of the debris cause a lot of friction, which can cause them to burn up from an altitude of 100 to 120 km. That is what we know as a meteor or a shooting star,” says Philippe Mollet of the observatory to VRT NWS. If the debris is large enough – about 5 to 10 centimeters in size – and does not burn up completely, particles can end up on the Earth’s surface. “We call those meteorites or meteor rocks. But I don’t think this meteor was big enough to cause any debris.”

Anyone who sees shooting stars or other natural phenomena in the sky can report this on the Mira website.
