Meteor At 33,000 Miles Per Hour Passes and Illuminates North Carolina Sky

RALEIGH – A meteor brightly lit up at 33,000 miles per hour lit up the night sky over eastern North Carolina, United States of America (USA), Wednesday 10 November 2021 evening. More than 200 eyewitnesses from 11 East Coast states and Washington DC saw the meteor streak across North Carolina’s night sky before burning up over Edgecombe County.

Photos and videos posted on social media show the fireball very brightly streaking through the sky and turning dim as it approaches the ground. Eyewitnesses began to see the meteor at around 21:12 local time, and some residents said they were afraid to see the flash. According to the American Meteor Society, scientists estimate the meteor was traveling at 33,000 miles per hour or 53,108 kilometers per hour. The meteor appeared just minutes after the launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, leading some to mistake it for a rocket. “That fireball is as bright as the Full Moon. The object is estimated to weigh about 20 kg and a diameter of 10 inches (25 cm). It happened just 3.5 seconds before (the meteor) was destroyed 28 miles (45 km) above Macclesfield (in the Rocky Mount metro area.),” the American Meteor Society said in a statement.
