Meta’s SeamlessM4T: The Real-Life Babel Fish Language Translator Inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

A scientific comedy program that was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 entitled The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy seemed to be just an entertainment program in the 1970s. But, 50 years later, one of the tools at the event, the Babel Fish, inspired tech company Meta to make a splash.

Babel Fish is a yellow fish that can translate various languages into the language of its users. This idea is what Meta, the parent company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp wants to create.

“Building universal language translators, such as the fictional Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is a challenge because existing speech-to-speech and speech-to-text systems cover only a small fraction of the world’s languages,” said Meta on its official website, accessed by ANTARA News Bengkulu, Wednesday (23/8).

Meta Artificial Intelligent. (Meta)

Meta named this multilingual translator as SeamlessM4T. Meta claims the artificial intelligence (AI or artificial intelligence) approach of SeamlessM4T can reduce errors and has the best quality of the translation process.

“This allows people who speak different languages to communicate with each other effectively,” writes Meta.

Meta says SeamlessM4T has a speech recognition feature for 100 languages. It can also translate speech-to-text for nearly 100 input and output languages.

“Speech-to-speech translation, supports nearly 100 input languages and 36 output languages (including English). … Text-to-speech translation supports nearly 100 input languages and 35 output languages (including English)” they wrote.

To gain this capability, the engine developed by Meta has undergone thousands of hours of experimentation. Meta says the researchers at work have aligned 443,000 hours of speech to text and created 29,000 hours of speech-to-speech sync.

This way Seamless4T “teach” speech to text, translate text, generate speech from text, and translate words spoken in one language into words of another.

“We believe SeamlessM4T is an important breakthrough for the AI community to create a universal multitasking system,” wrote Meta.
