The Future of AR Glasses: Meta’s Multimodal AI Makes Strides

For a few weeks now, Meta’s AI assistant integrated into its Ray-Ban smart glasses has become a topic of fascination. With a simple voice command of “Hey Meta,” this assistant can respond to queries and analyze the wearer’s surroundings. Although still a work in progress, it offers a sneak peek into the wonders that lie ahead.

A Major Shift to Generative AI

Surprisingly, Meta hadn’t anticipated the immense role that generative AI would play in their glasses until recently. During an interview last fall, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed their plans to bring multimodal AI to their product—a step that he believed would be a game-changer, potentially overshadowing “super high-quality holograms.”

Second-Generation Ray-Bans Signaling Success

With Meta dedicating billions of dollars to the AR glasses industry over the past six years, the initial response to the first generation of Meta Ray-Bans had left much to be desired. Hence, the introduction of version two was a critical moment that demanded success. Encouragingly, early reports indicate positive reception. Unofficial estimates put more than a million units sold, and during Meta’s recent earnings call, Zuckerberg himself acknowledged sold-out styles. Moreover, with the addition of multimodal AI capabilities, Meta’s latest offering may very well become the leading AI wearable in the market.
