It’s been a week since Twitter’s current main competitor, Meta’s microblogging app Threads, saw the light of day. It is currently banned in the European Union (EU) for privacy reasons, but Europeans have so far managed to get around this ban by using a VPN. It looks like these joys were short-lived, as the Meta has now completely blocked access to Threads in EU, as changing the location no longer helps to access it either.
Meta has announced that it has taken additional measures to prevent European users from accessing Threads. The company has emphasized that Europe is a very important market for “Meta”, so it hopes to be able to offer the new app in European countries in the future. Currently, Threads is not allowed in the EU due to regulations that prohibit the transfer of user data from one platform to another, as is the case here when information is to be transferred from Instagram to Threads.

Also, according to Meta’s privacy policy, Threads tracks users extensively and may collect a variety of personal data, including highly sensitive information such as health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts and search history. This approach creates legal and regulatory challenges for launching Threads in the EU. According to the EU Data Protection Regulation, Meta requires a valid legal basis to lawfully process such personal data
