Written by Samah Labib Saturday, July 29, 2023 09:00 PM Leaks revealed the launch of the mobile application version of Meta “Horizon Worlds app,” coming soon according to Janko Roettgers’ Lowpass newsletter reported by theverge.
We’ve known that Meta has been working on a mobile version of Horizon Worlds, the company’s metaverse social platform that’s currently only available on its Quest VR hardware, for some time, but it’s still not here.
Apparently, the company made a working version last year, but “we ended up not shipping it,” Vishal Shah, vice president of Metaverse meta, said in an interview with Roettgers. “It was kind of like a mobile VR game compared to the original mobile experience.”
Shah didn’t tell Rutgers exactly when the app will be available on mobile, and I won’t be confident of an imminent release until Meta has already given an exact timeline. At the end of January, Meta itself said the app would hit mobile and web “soon,” but it still isn’t there yet. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the timing of the mobile and web apps.
Shah told Rutgers that Super Rumble, the recently officially launched Meta shooter within Horizon Worlds, will be among the first beta-tested games for the platform on mobile, and that it looks a lot nicer than most experiences on the platform due to the fact that it ” They were created using imported elements, assets, and materials, something previously not possible with Horizon,” says Rutgers. Obviously, the ability to fetch imported assets will be there for hand-selected developers to get started and roll out more widely.
Horizon Worlds hasn’t been a huge Meta hit yet and in October CNBC reported that the platform had fewer than 200,00 users; On the other hand, the newly launched Meta Threads has surpassed 100 million users in a matter of days. That’s not even close to an apples-to-apples comparison – Threads is a free smartphone app, while Horizon Worlds currently requires a Quest VR headset but it shows just how different the scale is between the two platforms right now. (The Metaverse metaverse business continues to be a moneymaker, as the company reported a net loss of $3.7 billion for its Reality Labs division last quarter.)
And the mobile version of Horizon Worlds Meta could help it better compete with Fortnite and Roblox, also allowing creators to create games and social experiences. Interestingly, since Horizon Worlds is looking more into mobile, Roblox is looking more into virtual reality, and Roblox just launched in open beta on the Quest headset.
