It’s been almost a year since Meta announced at its Connect 2022 conference last October that digital avatars are finally coming, and users of Horizon Worlds, Meta’s virtual reality (VR) platform, will be the first to try this exclusive feature. After 10 months, the feature is slowly rolling out to early adopters, but contrary to what was promised, it’s first found in the latest beta version of the Quest Home platform and is slowly rolling out to testers in the Horizon Worlds beta on mobile and PC.
It is specified that the user will not be able to see the legs of his own digital avatar. However, they will be visible to other players as well as in a reflection such as a virtual mirror. Mark Zuckerberg, the head of “Meta”, previously said that legs are one of the most requested improvements by users, which apparently are not so easy to add.

Also, the head of “Meta” explains that until now the avatars have been shown without legs, because it was difficult for the VR glasses to understand where exactly they are. For example, if a digital avatar is sitting at a desk, individual VR glasses might struggle to understand what those legs are doing because the desk blocks the view. To solve this problem, “Meta” has created an artificial intelligence model that predicts the state of the whole body.
Meta could provide more information about the planned improvements to digital avatars at the Connect 2023 event on September 27, where the company will probably also introduce the latest VR glasses Quest 3.
