The CEO of Meta, who is also an avid mixed martial artist, posted a message on social media on Friday to announce that he had torn one of his anterior cruciate ligaments while training. ‘was training for a fight scheduled for early next year.

In a photo he posted on Instagram, he can be seen lying in a hospital bed, his left knee elevated, bandaged and fitted with a splint.

“I tore my anterior cruciate ligament and just came out of surgery to rebuild it,” Mr. Zuckerberg noted on Instagram.

“I am grateful for the work of the doctors and the team who take care of me. I was training for my competitive mixed martial arts fight early next year, but now it will be a little delayed. I still look forward to doing it after I recover. Thank you all for your love and support,” he continued.

Meta, which is headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif., did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment from The Associated Press.

Mr. Zuckerberg, who competed in his first jiu-jitsu tournament in May, frequently posts updates about his mixed martial arts preparation.

A few weeks ago, he shared a close-up photo of his face on Instagram showing bruising on the bridge of his nose and under his eyes, which he attributed to a fight that got “a little out of control.”

Facebook founder and billionaire Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, made headlines this summer when they agreed to face off in person in late June.

MM. Musk and Zuckerberg fueled interest in the potential clash by throwing barbs at each other online. At one point, Mr. Musk notably boasted about working out by lifting weights.

But in August, he wrote on social media that he might need surgery before the fight took place.

Shortly afterward, Mr. Zuckerberg replied on Threads that he was ready to move on.

“If Elon ever gets serious about a real official date and event, he knows how to reach me. If not, it’s time to move on. I will focus on competing with people who take this sport seriously,” he wrote.
